History of the Church

picture of church.jpg

In 1977, Merrill "Tony" Covalt and his wife Margaret "Kay" Covalt started the Fellowship Bible Church in the old Millheim Theater. They held church there for 8-9 months until they moved it to the Madisonburg Civic Center.  After 6 months there, Tony and Kay moved the church services into their own home.

Two years later in 1979 they received word of an empty church on Lower Georges Valley Road in Spring Mills.  It had formally been an Evangelical United Brethren Church before it closed.  It sat empty and unused for many years.

From September of 1979 to August of 1981 the church was rented and then in 1981 it was purchased from Robert and Helen Steiger (Juanita’s parents).   It is the “Locust Grove Fellowship Bible Church".

Tony was the pastor of the church until 2004 when he went home to be the Lord following his wife Kay in 1990. Tony's son Michael took over as pastor in 2004 and is still there today.  Pastor Michael "Mike" and his wife Juanita "Nita" have 4 children and 10 grandchildren within their 43 years of marriage.  (Fun fact-- Mike and Nita's first date was the day that the agreement was made to purchased the church from Nita's parents.) IT WAS A GOD THING!

In 2020, Fellowship Bible Church started using technology such as Facebook Live to reach a bigger audience. Throughout the summer, the church holds many picnics and  Community Picnic Sings with Gospel Singers from around the country.
